This Year,
Creativity
Comes to Life
At each home, a creative partnership brings a distinct vision to life—an interpretation shaped by the character of the house and the imagination of the designers and Garden Club volunteers who welcome you.

Six homes. Six themes. Six inspired celebrations of living beautifully.
Rooms are layered with flowers, tables are set in anticipation of gathering, and familiar spaces are transformed into places of discovery. Professional artistry and community stewardship work side by side, inviting guests to experience every stop as both a destination and a moment of hospitality.

Take the Inspiration Home with You
THE MARKETPLACE AT DUNCRAIG
New this year, the grounds of Duncraig Manor become a village market created especially for Tour guests—a place where the day’s inspiration continues in a charming open-air pavilion.
A thoughtfully curated collection of artists, designers, gardeners, and specialty retailers—many of them featured in the homes—offers original art, garden elements, antiques, flowers, textiles, and seasonal provisions for home and table. Here, the experience of the Tour extends beyond the threshold, allowing visitors to carry its beauty into their own daily lives. Under the direction of Beth Gaddis, former owner of Libra Domo, the pavilion is transformed with potted gardens and branches in bloom. Hand-draped tables and a unified presentation create the feeling of a vibrant, creative marketplace—festive, gracious, and rooted in place.

The Marketplace is more than a stop along the way; it is an opportunity to carry the experience of the Tour home with you. Choose a piece that holds the memory of the day—something grown, made, or imagined—so that the beauty discovered in these homes and gardens continues to live.

The Marketplace is your destination and your pause: a place to gather, to linger, and to continue the conversation between house, garden, and community.
Tour homes and the Marketplace are open Saturday, April 11, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Mary Jo & Bob Newman
LAKE PINEHURST
From their secluded peninsula on Lake Pinehurst, Bob and Mary Jo Newman live in constant conversation with the water—surrounded by its sparkle, an abundance of song birds, and the cheerful sounds of neighbors drifting by on sunset paddles.
Like the bow of a vessel at anchor, the house reaches toward the shoreline, its deep, encircling porches opening to a light-filled and welcoming first-floor living space. Inside, great arcing ceiling beams echo the hull of a ship, rising dramatically overhead with a sense of strength and shelter.
For the Newmans, this closeness to the water is more than a view—it is a lifelong narrative. In 1971, Bob was among the first UCLA rowers to earn a place on the U.S. National Team, and he later returned to the program as head coach of UCLA Men’s Rowing from 1979 to 1985. That enduring bond with the rhythm of water is felt throughout the home. Mary Jo’s presence is equally vivid.
An accomplished artist, her paintings add another layer of color, memory, and personal expression to a house that is, in every sense, shaped by the lives they both have lived.

SPECIAL FEATURE
A Girls' Weekend Getaway
ON LAKE PINEHURST
At the Newman home, the lake sets the pace for a relaxed and welcoming Girls’ Weekend Getaway, thoughtfully styled by the creative partners of Eloise Trading Company in downtown Aberdeen. Designed for gathering, the home’s open living spaces and broad porches become a series of easy, livable moments that suggest friends arriving for a few unhurried days on the water. Guests are greeted on the porch with a casual welcome coffee, pastries, and market bags ready for a morning paddle or a walk along the shoreline. Inside, the great room is arranged for conversation and sharing, with flowers, small plates, and comfortable seating that invites everyone to settle in and stay awhile. Bedrooms are reimagined as a cozy retreat for late-night chats and slow mornings, while another vignette hints at a day on the lake, with sun hats, towels, and woven totes gathered near the door. Mary Jo’s paintings quietly guide the palette, their colors reflected in the textiles and tabletop details throughout the house. In the kitchen and dining area, an informal spread suggests a weekend of grazing, laughter, and impromptu celebrations. As afternoon turns to evening, the focus moves back outdoors. The porch is set for sunset with simple cocktails, soft candlelight, and a table dressed for a relaxed supper overlooking the water. The feeling is personal and effortless—as though the friends have just stepped out for a boat ride and will return at any moment. Through these layered scenes, Eloise, Etc. captures the spirit of a true getaway: comfortable, joyful, and centered on time together in a home that was made for lakeside living.

Kathy & Mark Parson
EVERETTE COTTAGE
This 1940s cottage in the Village of Pinehurst was thoughtfully transformed in 2012, blending new living spaces with the scale and charm of the original house. A front gable with an arched window adds character and presence, while a curved planter wall and charming fountain shapes an inviting outdoor room within the cottage garden setting. A 1,400-square-foot addition introduced a new kitchen, family room, guest bedrooms, and porches designed for gathering.
Vaulted ceilings in the living room and kitchen, finished with reclaimed wood, bring warmth and texture that feel original to the home. A newly reimagined garage provides a dramatic and unexpected counterpoint. Conceived as Mark’s working studio, it offers a glimpse into the creative life of a local architect known for a fresh yet classically grounded approach to design in the Sandhills.
Rooted in the Pinehurst cottage vernacular yet tailored for modern living, the space reads as an immersive atelier—part workshop, part retreat—where guitars and a vintage motorcycle become sculptural focal points, a space that feels at once like a working studio and the ultimate retreat—an unexpected moment on the Tour that guests will not want to miss.

The backyard is designed for recreation and retreat, with a bocce court, chess board and wood-fired pizza oven for easy entertaining. A winding water feature, inspired by the stream beside the Swilcan Bridge at St. Andrews, moves quietly through the lawn. The intimate rear courtyard, framed by a guest cottage that blends seamlessly with the original house, completes a property that honors its history while living comfortably—and creatively—in the present.

A Spring Garden Party
AT EVERETTE COTTAGE
For the Tour, the courtyard behind the home of Mark and Kathy Parson becomes the setting for a relaxed spring garden party, unfolding just beyond Mark’s studio, where his architectural practice and personal collections reflect a life shaped by design. Here, the wood-fired pizza oven—well known among friends for Mark’s homemade pizzas— forms the heart of the gathering, its warmth drawing guests to long tables simply set for sharing. Carol Dowd of Botanicals fills the courtyard with abundant seasonal arrangements, her flowers carrying the colors and textures of Pinehurst into these garden rooms. Café lights overhead, the scent of baking dough and fresh herbs in the air and welcoming seating areas create an atmosphere that feels both effortless and familiar. Nearby, the bocce court sets an easy rhythm for the afternoon, with friendly matches and cold beers moving the celebration between house and landscape. It is a setting where architecture, garden, and hospitality meet—an expression of Mark's and Kathy’s design philosophy and a timeless welcome to spring in historic Pinehurst.
